TV News Channels

There are quite a few to choose from.
Does anyone have a particular favourite?
Personally I prefer the foreign news ones - which vary spectacularly in quality - as the one or two "issues du jour" on the domestic channels can seem parochial and repetitive, and BBC World is, sadly, unavailable in the UK.

I currently have an eye on the NASA channel Watching the return of the last shuttle mission today. It has now separated from the international space station for its last time.

I'll have an eye on the BBC Parliament Channel starting at lunchtimes with Stephenson and Yates of the Yard up before the Home Afairs Select Committee. At 2.30 Murdoch and Murdoch are before the Culture and Media Select Committee followed by Rebekha Brooks at 3.30. so an interesting day of live telly in prospect. Somehow have have a lot of work to do as well.

During the Arab Spring, Aljazeera Englisg Channel has been brilliant, where as the vernerable BBC have been poor. I dip into a lot of foreign channels which are often facinating or downright strange.

I watch a lot of my TV on my iPad. Tvcatchup lets me see (almost live) all the terrestrial channels and loads of freeview and Freesat ones. Also the BBC iPlayer and 4OD apps. There are also several world TV apps, TVU, JustinTV, LiveStation, WorldTVHD. Also worth a mention are vimeo, National filmboard of Canada app, Showyou and Roadshow.

I watch BBC World when I'm abroad, since it's the only BBC channel you can get in most parts of the world. But it's actually rubbish - far more features than news, and very repetitive. I don't mind news being repeated, but repeated background reports are boring. CNN is much better. And in the UK you're better off with BBC News channel.

BBC News is also repetitive mind you. I have never seen the World version.
I agree that Al Jazeera has been excellent for the "Arab Spring" coverage. In fact it is generally excellent fullstop.
Of the others RT is downright bizarre, the US ones I am less keen on having little interest in US affairs

If you want info on financial matters its worth tuning into Max Kleiser on Russian TV. No punches pulled about how the US is ruining the world's economy and Ben Bianki gets a regular airing.

The Israeli Navy have just boared a French yacht in international waters as it enforces its illegal blockade of Gaza. Nothing on the BBC about it.

the BBC's news today is understandably concentrating on the hacking story. The Gaza story is on their website, though

I must admit that's one of the programs I was thinking of when I said "downright bizarre" The Lord and all his minions deliver us from discredited US "economists" taking shelter in places like RT which basically is the only station presumably that will have him.

Yes, it's hilarious isn't it. Ought to be listed under comedy though :-)

If you want pure propaganda partisan news watch Press the Iranian channel .That comedian George Gallagher is always worth a laugh and then there is that socialist millionaire Tony Benn who wanted the UK to be run by the TUC.
You wont hear much about Iran itself .

Yes Press TV (note the innocuous-sounding name!) is propaganda for sure, although it does have some good stuff. As you say, though, don't look to it for objective coverage of Iranian affairs, and don't look to RT for any objective coverage of Russian affairs either.
