Why are the BBC so good at creating period pieces ie George IV, William IV, Queen Victoria era?

Yet they are so poor at recreating more modern period pieces ie !940s-!960s?

who, apart from the Daily Mail, says they are? Series like All Creatures Great and Small, and one-offs like Ballet Shoes, has the periods just right.
Unlike modern period dramas, there is no one alive who can use personal experience to vouch for the authenticity of physical speech patterns etc. used in dramas set in the 1800s, so who can say that recreations of that era are better, let alone "good".
