Just started watching this and the first host Amish man has just said 'we don't want a big family, just five children' - just found it odd that he thinks that is not a big family.
People did have larger families years ago. My mother was one of four but she had a family with 11 children living one side of her and 14 the other. People generally have less and less children as wealth and educate improve.
Well most of you know that I have five children and that it causes some 'looks' and comments, made me wonder what is considered an average sized Amish family.
Hi ummm, when I was still working and announced number three people were flabberghasted. Maybe we get lots of 'looks' because there is not much between them age wise, or maybe it looks like four of them go together and one doesn't!
Googling 'Amish family size' unsurprisingly results in a certain amount of variation in answers but the majority of websites suggest that around 7 is the most common number of children in an Amish family, e.g. here:

i saw it and thought it was really good, seen write ups about it last week. 5 i guess is an average number and i hope the couple is blessed to have children at some point they are a lovely couplex
My father was Irish, and one of 12, my mother was Welsh and one of three, but my father loved large families, I am one of three!......mother won here!.............lol.....
