Just started watching this and the first host Amish man has just said 'we don't want a big family, just five children' - just found it odd that he thinks that is not a big family.

Is that 5 children per wife?
Maybe he's found a hobby instead!

People did have larger families years ago. My mother was one of four but she had a family with 11 children living one side of her and 14 the other. People generally have less and less children as wealth and educate improve.
I forgot to watch that, I was thinking that the girls would find it hard living with them, not being used to their ways.
5 children is not that big though. Depends where you're from.

My mate is one of 14 and her husband is one of 16. Now, that is a large family.
'education' of course! How did 'educate' slip in?
is it on freeview sher, really want to see this!......
Gran - they all seemed to fit in really well. They were nice, respectable kids.

Well most of you know that I have five children and that it causes some 'looks' and comments, made me wonder what is considered an average sized Amish family.
I really don't understand why it cause 'looks' and 'comments' for you Sher.

Maybe it's just us Irish are more used to bigger families.
my Irish friend is one of 14 children.

the family photos are HUGE.

Hi ummm, when I was still working and announced number three people were flabberghasted. Maybe we get lots of 'looks' because there is not much between them age wise, or maybe it looks like four of them go together and one doesn't!
My Dads the youngest of 13. Mum one of 5. All 4 grand parents were in double figures....
Googling 'Amish family size' unsurprisingly results in a certain amount of variation in answers but the majority of websites suggest that around 7 is the most common number of children in an Amish family, e.g. here:

i saw it and thought it was really good, seen write ups about it last week. 5 i guess is an average number and i hope the couple is blessed to have children at some point they are a lovely couplex
My father was Irish, and one of 12, my mother was Welsh and one of three, but my father loved large families, I am one of three!......mother won here!.............lol.....
I just got congratulations when I announced number 3. And I still get asked if I'm going to have any more :-)
My Dad was one of fourteen and my mother one of eleven .
And that's Cornwall ( mother) and Norfolk( father)
I'm one of five .

I was teaching at the time and it seemed to be strongly frowned upon - I no longer teach.
