New Amy Winehouse Album

During her lifetime, Amy recorded a lot of stuff.

Her musical instinct told her what was good, and should be released, and what was rubbish, and should be dumped.

As a result, she becomes known for great music.

After her death, some money grabber digs up all the poop that Amy herself has rejected, and releases a "new" album, of "previously unreleased" material (previously unreleased because Amy's discerning musical instinct told her to NOT release it).

So has anyone bought the new Amy Winehouse "rubbish that she discarded" album?

I really like it. Although not as good as Frank or Back to Black, its a lovely reminder of just how much talent she had. There are original recordings of afew songs which was nice to hear a different arrangement. There are alot of passages from people she worked with aswell. \also it says in the album sleeve that £1 of every sale is going to the charity her Dad set up for disadvantaged kids. I'd recomend it :)

I bought it yesterday funnily enough, I don't know enough about her to know if it's poop or not to her standards but I have to say I'm really enjoying it. I only really bought it because her parents are setting up a charity with her estate, glad I did.

The charitable aspect is good.

I just wonder why Amy decided the recordings shouldn't be released.

Although she had loads of problems, one thing that she never lost was her sense of good music.

I was never a big fan of Amy Winehouse. I know she has amazing talent but I just never clicked with her music. I think a lot of people will buy this just because of the circumstance.

I agree with you JJ, it just seems to me like someone cashing in on her death. I won't be buying it.

A fair few of them were recorded before she even released Frank , so maybe record companies wouldn't give her an album then? The Tony Bennet duet is the only recent recording.... perhaps planned for a new album? Ive read somewhere theres alot more unreleased aswell. Hope they don't exploit it!

On what basis do you claim to know what Amy Whitehouse was thinking at any point, unless she self published (she didn't) there are many people involved in what goes out on any album. Having listened to Amy since before Frank was released I couldn't say why certain things weren't released but unreleased materiel will always be brought to market after an act becomes defunct through whatever reason, look at the Beatles for instance.

I couldn't see/hear people's fascination with her when she was alive so won't be bothering with this one, charity donation or not.

Some songs obviously didn't work to her standards or needed more work on them. I was surprised how many albums Eva Cassidy's recording company came up with after she had died.

I absolutely adored her music and as Mark Ronson has something to do with this new album I hoped for the best. I've heard a couple of tracks and they haven't grabbed me and I so wanted them to. Lots of it is really early stuff before Frank and before she developed to the full that gorgeous deep throaty style. I heard one track just after I had been listening to her singing Don't Go to Strangers with Paul Weller and thought there was no comparison. But I will buy it and hope to be proved wrong.

JB12 What do you mean? It will be her family who has inherited the material and it's up to them what they do with it.

If her family inherit the back catalogue, they can release it ...

(1) for artistic reasons (except Amy decided against that)

(2) for charitable reasons (but only £1 is going to charity)

(3) for cynical opportunistic reasons (!)
