My 19 YO daughter tells me that the proof of age cards aren't accepted at most places as they are too easily bought therefore a driving license or passport is more readily accepted but I can see your concerns.
if you know the club he wants to go in why go down with his passport before the day explain it is his birthday and you do not want him to carry his passport around on the night

get the manager to ok it and then the door staff/ bar staff will know he is old enough

blooming 'eck - if they don't accept those cards, it's ridonkulous!
its passport / driving licence or nothing in most places

also he will not thank you got going down there and speaking to the bouncers / manager for him.
Get him to go down there today for himself, then!
He really needs to take his passport on the night out, if he doesn't he won't be able to get served at the bar even if he manages to get into the club in the first place. Tell him if he loses it he has to pay to replace it himself.
ID cards seem quite acceptable when one is required to possess one to buy intoxicating liquids, time has come for everyone to possess an ID card.
Most bars, etc, only accept passports (and sometime driving licences), together with CitizenCard:

It's either driving license or passport like others have said. Just warn him that if he loses it, he has to pay for a replacement! That'll make him more careful ;)

And I think speaking to the bar is silly. I'm sure they wont stay in the same place all night so he will have to show it on more than one occasion.
Why are you even involved in any of this? He's 18 for goodness sake.

are you serious sidkid or winding me up? What a ridiculous statement!
<<There's no way he is taking his passport out!>> Says it all really. I feel sorry for the man. He is not 14 any more whether you like it or not. I'm sure you've done a fantastic job bringing him up but he is a grown man now. You maybe need to stop being such a mother-hen. Its really not doing him any favours.
Question Author
how dare you say you feel sorry for him! Who do you think you are? Perhaps i should just let him do what he wants, when he wants, whilst still living in my house? Perhaps i shouldn't show any concern or responsibilty for him as soon as he turns 18? You sound like the sort who'd soon blame me if he got into trouble. you are a complete stronso and i will not read any further replies from you as your opinion stinks. I find your answer extremely judjemental and offensive.
crikey crisgal.. bit of a over reaction don`t think sidkid said anything offensive. probably have a go at me now, but I think if my son considers himself to be old enough to go drinking, then to also be responsible enough to manage to bring his passport home is not unreasonable.
I think that's a tad unnecessary Sid. Crisgal was only asking a question about ID, not parenting tips.
I wish you were my Mum. You seem really nice apart from the vitriol and occasional outbursts of rage. BTW I googled your word stronso and came up blank but I did find stronzo which apparently is Italian for 'piece of sh 1t'. Charming.....
