Single Person Council Tax

When I move out in May my Dad will begin to claim the discount for single persons council tax.

Most of the house hold bills are currently in my name and get paid from my bank account but there's a couple, like the BT account that are still going to be in contract for a few months after I move out. Because my Dad wants to keep the services then I will continue to keep them in my name and he will pay me for them so we don't incur any cancellation charges (I've checked with the companies and I can't just change the name on the account).

If there are still bills going to his address in my name will the council look into that and will it cause him any bother?

No. You'll have a rental agreement elsewhere.

Nope - he'll be fine - particularly since you can prove that you are renting and/or paying council tax elsewhere.

If it was me, I would raise it with the council first so that any little jobsworth snotfaces (no offence intended to any council workers who are reading this) don't get a chance to misunderstand.

As far as I am aware you declare the house has but the one occupant and that is it. I can't see councils having to time or money to go on wild goose chases regarding bills in someone else's name. At least not without better evidence of tax evasion than that.

I did sort of think it might only be a problem is some nut job decided to report that he wasn't living there alone and if the council looked into it then they would get suspicious as there were bills in my name.

But then, he isn't actually going to be doing anything wrong so I shouldn't be worrying. It's a bad habit of mine.

will he get worried if the local council nutjob (they've all got one) comes prying or can he tell them to take a hike?

Knowing my Dad he would tell them in no uncertain terms to do one.
