Someone no one has heard of, who played flute on a one hit wonder 29 years ago has died.
Why is that 'News'?

I did like the record, but surely not worth our national broadcaster telling us about it.

It is not unusual for certain 'celebrities' deaths to be in the news, even if we have not heard of them personally.
Apparently there was some trouble over the copyright of 'Down Under' way back in 2010.

Business as usual which I bought when it first came out, and still have, is a great album. Singer Colin Hay, whom I also assume you haven't heard of, is still very popular in the US.

it's not on the Telegraph's front page online; instead they have "Thousands flock to Smurf village". The Guardian has an analysis of the Famous Five's diet
("Enid Blyton's heroes, now 70 years old, had an approach to food that we could all learn from").
Every outlet has its own take on popular culture, I suppose.
