zombie movie? i'm at a loss!

Can anybody help me with this movie I'm trying to find? I remember it was late 70s looking with a male protagonist who at some point hooks up with an african american girl who a little afro of some kind. The setting is some american city which is pretty abandoned, and plagued with some sort of zombies, I vaguely remember they had a disease of some kind so they wore hoods or shrouds and had pale yellow eyes? I remember a scene in a department store etc, please can anyone help me?!? I'd be greatly obliged!

I think the film you are thinking of is "The Omega Man " with Charlton Heston , my friend bought it on dvd last year

It was indeed The Omega Man, from 1971. The plague was the result of a biological warfare virus outbreak. The Simpsons did a brilliant skit on this!
