Deciding the dates of sporting events
How are the dates of major sporting events decided so that there is as little overlap as possible? This summer he have just had the Euros in football, the Olympics will start later this month, and in between we have Wimbledon and the Tour De France which do overlap but the final days are separated by a week.
Do the heads of the world organisations get together each year, informally or officially, and agree the dates for their events a few years in advance?
Or is there an agreed hierarchy of importance, so that the IOC gets 1st pick of the dates for the years ahead, followed by FIFA or UEFA deciding when their tournaments will be held, then the next level of the hierarchy, and so on?
Or is there no co-ordination whatsoever, each organisation deciding on what would be best for them based on dates that have already been announced by others?

If need be they'd make sure Euros and Olympics didn't clash, and any other events where it obviously mattered. An example I can think of is in 1998 when the Tour de France was held in August so as not to clash with the World Cup in the same country in July
