We are all different, and you cannot please all of the people all of the time. Given how long in the tooth John Cleese is nowadays, and given that both Basil Fawlty and Alan Partridge are at least somewhat reliant on verbal humour, I think Mr. Bean was probably the best choice :)

@ thenry - well mr bean was mime / visual humour. Rowan Atkinson may well have been inspired by Marceau, but the character Atkinson created, Mr.Bean, was a product of british culture.
To be truthful, I am not a huge fan of Mr. Bean, but I thought that the whole Chariots of Fire sequence was an absolute hoot :)
