Then there are documentaries on Hitler, Saddam, etc. I mean, where should the line be drawn? And also doesn't this mean the BBC are now declaring Savile guilty before any proper investigation has taken place?

The BBC will be doing a massive damage limitation excercise.
there will be plenty of people working there who were well aware of what was going on, not to mention staff that will know of others that may well get outed

It does not seem inappropriate to me that they withdraw entertainment programmes showing Jimmy Saville, at least on a temporary basis, especially given the gravity of the allegations.It now seems there have been several investigations of his conduct over the years - but all have either been shelved or disregarded, motivated by a desire to "turn a blind eye", or because of concerns over libel allegations, or because of the fears of the impact on the charity work.

Given that some of the allegations relate specifically to the BBC, in the sense that it would seem that several influential employees knew about these events, or that at least some of the events are alleged to have taken place on BBC premises, it would not be suitable to broadcast such shows.

There is a massive difference between airing a documentary, airing information and offering education, and airing an entertainment show...

And the BBC have an eye to the public. The public, not surprisingly, seems to think that Savile was guilty of sexual assaults, frequently, over a long period. It may not take kindly to any programme showing the man in his familiar, friendly to all (and especially young people) guise.

Leslie Grantham served a life sentence for his crime. Savile escaped unpunished. And, as others have said, the BBC seemed to have facilitated, probably unwittingly, Savile's abuses.

The sight of Savile surrounding himself with a group of 'lovelies', usually finding an excuse to make physical contact with at least one of them, may be too much for the public to stomach at the minute.

What I can't understand about this case is the fact that Saville was at times under investigation, and yet he was never arrested.and charged.

Yet back in 2003 Matthew Kelly was arrested on stage of a Birmingham theatre, all part the Operation Arundle that caught up with Jonathan King, Tam Paton, former manager of the 1970s pop group Bay City Rollers, and Steve Jolley, a music tycoon.

Saville was questioned (during a completely different investigation), but police didn't find evidence to support a charge.

On CH4 News last night, they broadcast an audio tape which to my mind, was enough to convince me that the man was absolutely and definitely a child abuser.

Given the nature of the charges repeating shows that alleged victims might see and be disturbed by would be very unsympathetic and the BBC would be (rightly ) criticized for it.

Especially by those now calling it a "damage limitation exercise"

Not just the BBC, Asda have jumped on the bandwagon too. They've withdrawn all their Jimmy Saville Halloween costumes!!!
