Hi, I am interested to know... what you, the fellow film fan, would consider ten films that ANYONE who dares to call themselves a movie fan simply HAS to have seen....?

The Life of Brian   Love Actually  It's a Wonderful Life  What lies Beneath   Gone with the Wind  Foul Play  Being There   Guess whos coming to Dinner  (the old version)   Four wedding and a funeral   The Women

Did everybody forget STAR WARS??????
Hi Litchick, I didn't forget it, it's one of my 3 all time favourite films, along with Raiders of The Lost Ark and the Wizard of Oz, but someone else has mentioned The Empire Strikes back and I was trying to think of must watch films that no-one else had mentioned, for example most people haven't listed a black and white film, yet some of the greatest films are black and white, eg Kind Hearts & Coronets (which is on my list!). I think favourite films is a different list from must see ones!
Well done spudqueen for choosing Saturday Night & Sunday Morning (not from Nottm are you?)!!

Sight & Sound magazine has been polling the world's film critics every 10 years since about 1952 for their top 10. The list nudges forward every decade but not far. the 2002 list was:

Citizen Kane
Vertigo
Rules of the game
Godfathers I and II
Tokyo story
2001
Battleship Potemkin
Sunrise
8 1/2
Singing in the rain.

Full list and others here

That's just for real film buffs who want to go through the full 100-year history of cinema. Never understood why Vertigo myself, but I love 2001 - on a proper huge screen, not a TV.

Dunno why Debbie does Dallas misses out every time.

Sound of Music

An Officer and a Gentleman

Ghost

Pretty Woman

Sleeping with the Enemy

Thornbirds

Fatal Attraction

Dances with Wolves

The Shining

Fried Green Tomatoes

Might I add, Foul Play. I thought of this old comedy with Goldie Hawn, but couldn't quite remember the name until I saw it in another post.

The Third Man

It's A Wonderful Life

The Man Who Would Be King

Thunderbolt And Lightfoot

Where Eagles Dare

Reservoir Dogs

The Great Escape

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

North By North-West

Casablanca

(I could probably list another 100 though!)

Hi Spudqueen!  I must have been hitting the bottle too hard whilst posting cause I swear I never saw another ABer say "Empire Strikes Back!" LOL!  It's funny because while I really enjoyed the whole "Star Wars" lot they are not my favourite.   I must admit, though, that "Jaws" definitely is!

Cheers!

Some great answers there. In no particular order:

  • Jaws
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark (hugely underrated IMO)
  • I'm all right Jack
  • Glengarry Glen Ross
  • Godfather 1&2
  • Goodfellas
  • Italian Job
  • Revenge of the Nerds
  • 2001
  • Brief Encounter
  • T2 (11th I know but I couldnt leave it out)

Would like to see more Woody Allen films. Marathon Man nearly made it but it does contain one of my favourite movie scenes. Not the dentistry scene but the one where the  elderly jewish woman see her former hell-warden Christian Szell (Olivier) on a Manhattan sidewalk and cries out - Der Weise Engel, Der Weise Engel. Truly chilling.

What about Jean De Florette and Manon Des Sources? Lovely stuff...
Hi mine would be- TopGun
Blade
Batman Begins
Star Wars ( any of them)
Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back
The Last Samurai
Cocktail
Platoon
Superman
Van Wilder Party Liason
