Last night I was travelling along Green Lane in Heywood, near Rochdale. There is a railway line which crosses the road but in all my years driving down that street, I've never seen a train going across - until last night at 7.15 pm, when along comes not one steam train, but two of them, coupled tail to tail, pulling some passenger coaches and diesel loco with an Inter City logo. The leading train was named "Britannia" and had the number 70000. It was tail to tail with
"The Lancashire Fusiliers", but I didn't get the number of that. It was fantastic to see, just a few yards from me. My 6 year old granddaughter was really excited, especially when both trains let of their whistle at the same time! Great stuff! I'm guessing that they were going to the East Lancashire Railway at Bury for the Easter holiday. Might even have something to with the Lancashire Fusiliers, who have a small barracks at Bury. Anyway, it was great sight. Reminded me of the times I used to see lots of them just as a matter of course when we went train spotting in the 50's. Happy days!

Me and my mate were at Thornaby station, waiting to go to the Metro Centre when the Tornado went chuffing past. I'd only seen her the once before, and she was outside the sheds at York. I guess she was going up to the North York Moors line.
Wow, I remember the steam trains on the London to Brighton line when I was little.
ah ... the good old days when trains had names
I saw the Flying Scotsman once when I was a small boy, It came down the track which was a the back of our house one Sunday morning, the stepping bridge that went over the railway track was absolutely packed with trainspotters.
