anyway if they have not followed their own rules I think it is unlawful dismissal and the moolah for that is much less. Somewhere on the lines of two weeks pay for every year of employment and capped at 25k thereabouts

The 2 years continuous service rule before an unfair dismissal claim can be brought only came into effect in April 2012. Anyone who is an employee and started before 6th April 2012 is on the 1 year rule.
Hence in 2 days time, only new employees in the last 12 months will still be 'locked out' by this aspect until they get their 2 years service in.
