I'm trying to find out what happened to a comedian I used to watch in the sixties. I think I first saw him on That was The Week That Was then during the years would make appearances in different variety shows.
He would sit on a high stool and then run through a long and funny diatribe of had happened to him during that day or week.I think he would introduce himself as I'm Alan Turvey and then speak in a very broad Brummie accent.

I think that OP has confused a few people/ times.
The Turvey I remember was Kevin Turvey, alter ego of Rik Mayall- strong Midlands accent speaking straight to camera. And in the (early) eighties.

Kevin Turvey was in A Kick Up the Eighties which was twenty years after TW3 but he fits your description. I can' think of anyone on TW3 with a broad Brummie accent

I don't recall Bernard Levin having a Brummie accent, although he was on TW3. Jasper Carrott has a broad Brummie accent in the very late 60's/70's - he's still around but not a stand-up comedian.

The Irish comedian Dave Allen used to sit on a high stool and although he was about in the 60s I don't know if he was ever on TW3.

Sorry Baldric, I meant to say "he's not a stand-up comedian NOW" but, yes, he certainly started out as one as far as TV appearances are concerned.
According to Wikipedia he started as a folk singer and his banter with the audience took over.

Yes Jasper Carrot started as a folk singer in the Boggery folk club in Birmingham.

This is why in his early TV performances he has a guitar round his neck for "comfort".

Jasper Carrot is also quite the businessman being co-owner of television production company Cellador who brought us Who Wants to be a Millionaire
