Edl To Protest In Downing Street.

Although not widely reported the EDL are to carry out a peaceful Downing Street protest, but various Left-Wing groups have said they will also attend, which as past experience has shown will turn the proceedings into a confrontation between the two sides.

Should the other groups join in with the EDL in common support for our soldiers, or failing that shouldn't the EDL be allowed to protest alone, then we could either see their correct colours or see that they are only there for a peaceful protest?

Or wouldn't that be in the best interests of the Left?

What is the protest about? Support for our soldiers, as you say, or is it a rant against immigrants in the wake of the recent slaughter in Woolwich? You say it's not widely reported, but you know about it. Have you got a link?

if it's a legitimate protest i see nothing wrong, some on the left don't seem to get the fact that not everyone, and i don't include myself in this, just playing devils advocate, agrees with their views.

Its a difficult question - groups like this are very much on the fringe so not that long ago would have probably been ignored but now in the days of 24 hour rolling news and constant internet updates etc minority groups are given a disproportionate amount of coverage when they take to the streets. This seems to have acted on opposition groups to also attend these events to ensure that the media footage doesn't just show one side of the argument. I personally think this just plays into the hands of the minority extremist groups and if we could all just try and ignore them they might go away but accept that this is unlikely to occur.

Re this specific protest I don't think it is in very good taste for the EDL to use the murder of a Lee Rigby to justify marching on Downing Street or to forward their political agenda.

Now don't you also agree that some support should be shown for our troops, no one else seems to bother, so why condemn the EDL for taking on the task?

Myself, I will support anyone, Muslim or anyone from the Left who are also prepared to stand up in support for our troops, we shouldn't miss the opportunity of this brutal savage mutation and beheading to shake our leaders into taking some decisive action, words are simply not enough.

Its that sort of sentiment that I struggle with - I don't like the idea that murder should be seen as an opportunity.

I'm not sure what supporting the troops means in a practical context - what decisive action are you or the EDL looking for?

My school days are long gone and any history I learned is now only half remembered (at best) but wasn't one of the triggers for the first world war the murder of one man in what would no doubt these days be called a terrorist attack?

Leave EDL make t-ossers of themselves; such action is not supportive to the Brit troops abroad as all it does is to create even more hostility in immigrant communities. It's the equivalent of their action the other night on selected mosques and they are seeking to engineer a divide between communities. It should be banned - just as much as the rights of suppressing free speech are abhorrent - the limits that May is thinking of bringing in.

This does not mean I condone what has gone on. Anything but. However, I do support sensible community building measures and support to what has happened - this starts with the flowers at the site of Lee's death and Southwark Cathedral offering the funeral...........

I work with a member of the EDL, he told me about this on friday, they are having one at the same time in Newcastle apparently.

The EDL have an agenda and unfortunately this tragic murder is good for their cause. If the EDL were genuine in their support for our troops they would have been wearing the Help the heroes T-shirts long ago instead of face concealing balaclavas.

At best, the EDL are being opportunist. Some wpuld say it is a cynical exploitation of the death of a young soldier.

Either way, all it will do is waste police time and taxpayers money so a bunch of drunken football hooligans can shout a bit.
