Freeview Box

Is it usual for a Freeview box to make a cracking noise frequently, and for the picture to break up temporarily? Will removing all the plugs and leaving them out for a while help?

The picture used to silently freeze for a second with my old freeview box, a bit like a dvd. Now I have a new box and the picture occasionally turns to blocks and makes a cracking sound. I thought it was the signal rather than the box as the strength indicator is never very stable.
