Sitcom episode letters newspaper cuttings

I recently saw an episode of a sitcom (I don't think it was a film) where a boy wants to get a girl to notice him and he is advised to send romantic letters. He does so by using newspaper clippings, which when read sound threatening rather than romantic. Does this ring any bells with anyone? I had a feeling it may have been Second Thoughts, but am not sure. Any help much appreciated. Thanks!
