How do you know that he's a 'despicable character' and a 'horrid man' ?

Do you know him that well you can pass that judgement?

Given, he's a crap comedian imo, but I can't comment on him as a person.

I think his humour and presentation are aimed at others than me.

I find his Dickensian / music-hall villain style rather wearing when he speaks.

That said, his writing is amazing, and I have laughed out loud at some of the sentence constgruction in his autobiographies.

It's possible that the BBC is relfecting his popularity, rather than adding to it - which as a public-service broadcaster, is within its remit.
