In the 1950s there must have been literally 10,000s of people in mental hospitals as i said the one near me had over 1,000 . In the 1980s 'Care in the community' was started and the mental hospitals started to close.
You could be put in a mental hospital just for suffering from what we call depression now, at one time an unmarried girl who got pregnant stood a good chance of being placed in a mental asylum.
There was a local story about an entertainer who was hired to perform at the mental hospital. He arrived and there had been a mix up so one one was expecting him. He kept asking '' where is the audience?'' and they thought he was one of the nutters, the story was that he didn't get out again for a week until they realised the mistake.

Lol. I heard something similar, Eddie, that a coach driver was asked to drop a coachload of people at a mental hospital. He didn't believe the passengers at all that they weren't meant to be there. But it was just a wind-up.
