To be honest, I thought it was quite good and I'm usually very critical when it comes to them messing around with classics like Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. For instance, I couldn't stand the remake movie (in 1998) with Vince Vaughn in the role of Norman Bates and Anne Heche playing Marion Crane. I couldn't for the life of me understand the point of that remake... How can they improve on perfection?
However, it is interesting to see this new take on the young Norman Bates and the peculiar relationship he had with his mother (plus it's good to see British actor Freddie Highmore in the role of the teenage Norman). My only minor criticism is that they've brought the characters into a modern-day setting, where I think I would've preferred it to be set in the 1950s before such things as mobile phones (but I think this is just me showing my age!) But apart from that, it looks very promising. I've set Bates Motel to record on series link.
