Pointless-Tonight's Answer On Who Are They

Tonight's programme wanted to know who sang "White Christmas" with the initials B C and Who partnered Emu with initials R H
The answers given by the university boys Jake and Olly were Barry Carlisle and Rolf Harris. Where they answering deliberately wrong or were they really that thick?

My guess is they were young plus I don't think Bing Crosby and Rod Hull tend to feature on University syllabi that much :-)

Yes they are young, so probably haven't heard of Emu and it's operator, and may have heard the song White Christmas but never heard of the singer!

Bing Crosby has been dead since 1977, about 36 years ago.

When you were 20 did you know about people your parents had listened to, about 20 years before you were born !

I remember when I was young (in about 1963) hearing Kathy Kirby singing Secret love and thinking it was a new song. Only as I got older did I know it was from a 1953 musical Calamity Jane. But as I was only 4 when that came out I would not have heard it.

I think it is very easy to criticize a young person for not knowing much if you have got your "old head" on with all its knowledge.

They should have bought the Daily Mail on Saturday there was a Bing Crosby Christmas CD in it. They were University students you would think they would have had a bit more general knowledge I'm sure they will get a ribbing when the go back did come across as thick!

As the answers were uk towns Rolf Harris does seem a rather stupid answer but as he was doing media studies or tea making or whatever then perhaps not.As in the previous answer his mate probably said Barry Carlisle so as his mate didn't feel so bad.

When do you think Bing Crosby recorded it? All right, it has been played a lot over the years, often as background music, not so much lately, but why would you expect anyone young to note or know who was singing it? Do you remember Hutch or Al Bowley or even know who they were? And Rod Hull died some years ago and wasn't really famous when he was performing.

I didn't see it (can't stand it!) but I hope that they didn't give the "excuse" that it was "a bit before their time"...

Bing singing a sentimental song about Christmas wasn't a world shattering event. It was a piece of light music so saying it was a bit before their time seems a reasonable excuse.
It must be more than 60 years ago he recorded it.
