is to close, i am baffled why anyone would think it a good subject matter for a musical. The man committed suicide after all. The case of a public figure Profumo caught up in a sex scandal, his family must have been upset that the subject matter isn't allowed to die down.

I did seriously wonder about the subject matter for this project. To have been alive when this scandal hit the papers, you would need to be in your fifties now, and in your sixties and seventies to have any memory of it. That means that for the bast majority of London theatre goers, this is a story of which they know nothing - a long-forgotten political scandal...

actually if you have watched the Mel Brooks film, which i have, its hilarious.
it is in the storyline you get the point of the Mel Brooks film, it's as they say a satire on the nature of celebrity. In the same way that Charlie Chaplin depiction of Hitler was an anti Hitler piece, both have something of value to say about that man and his vile regime. Mel Brooks is Jewish i think? so if he thought it would offend, it's unlikely it would have got the go ahead.

emmie - the film is not about a musical, it's about a Broadway show, and a scam to fleece the financial backers.

The whole point of the 'Hitler' scenario is that it is so tasteless that it will flop - and if course, the opposite occurs.

i was referring to Stephen Ward as a musical, i know what the Mel Brooks film was about, as i have seen it a number of times.

Mel Brooks was a hero of mine, along with Jaques Tati, Charlie Chaplin, they had the knack of being funny, whilst having something to say.

This is far from Lloyd Webbers first flop, he's had plenty others. Remember "Love never Dies" known as Paint never Dries, then there was Woman in White, Whistle down the Wind, Beautiful Games and Jeeves, all a waste of time. He is by no means a safe bet!
