Help.. New Windows 8 Laptop

I discovered that pinching fingers together on mouse pad, or pulling aaprt, would increase/reduce screen size... now it is suddenly not doing it and the screen is now too big and I cannot make it smaller! anyone know how??
Also, I had some .mobi files (books for kindle) in my email which I downloaded on old laptop and they would go to 'downloads' file... have downloaded them on my new windows8 laptop, and cannot find them anywhere!! any help greatly appreciated please. Thank you all.

Pressing the minus key while holding down Ctrl should reduce the screen size.

What are you using to view your emails? Does it include settings where you can specify the download folder? If you right-click on a .mobi file in an email is there a "save as..." option and, if you select it, does that default to the mystery folder?
