1980's TV programme

There is an actor who has just come in to eastenders (at the dance class) who used to have a TV series about playing cards betting etc and always loosing - his long time girlfriend had blond hair and he used to call her princess -At the begining of the programme it used to show you cards in the gutter by a grate with the rain falling over them  -  does anyone know the name of the programme and the characters name its driving me scatty

They grew up together and used to play on the bombsites in Brighton
