I'm having a lot of memories re-triggered and it hasn't changed much. What you do not get is the sense of smell in and out of the hotel...Mumbai is not the most fragrant of cities in a pleasant sense.

I wondered how good the hotel would be. As for the smell, it probably was better than that of one of his countrymen who fitted one of those theraputic electric beds for me recently. Hope the Ganges didn't make him smell like that... or maybe a dip in anything would help.
I love the smell of Indian hotels. I love the plush carpets that your feet sink into when you walk to your room. I love the dark woods, heavy brass door handles, the staff wearing their traditional dress, the ice cold Cobra beer that you have when you get to your room, the fruit bats and black kites that are flying around outside of the shuttered windows. I love the food and the head massages and the perfumed soaps and the semi precious stones that can be bought at bargain prices.
I did the Golden triangle. 5*+ hotels were equivalent to our 3*. They pay staff a pittance & treat them like slaves. Woe betide a staff member who upsets a guest, their very life is at stake. I dont enjoy that pressure on anyone serving me. Indian Men were friendly & answered when spoken to whereas women rudely turn their back. Having seen the Taj Mahal & had my tongah ride, I have no wish to return to witness the squalor and misery of the destitue. GB give India £280million, what for?
