What is this all about, first there are complaints if not enough black actors are chosen in film or television roles, and whites are branded racist if they blacken up and star in black roles, and here we have black persons posing in slavery roles, and even this is still considered racist?

But think of the furore if they'd used white men and women as models. I think most of the slaves in our consciousness were black Africans.

Ah, perhaps you have it, maybe those taking part were perhaps Caribbean, British, or even American African, and not your true African?
I think in his efforts to portray a condemnation of the 'Human Zoo' as it was, he has blurred the lines and created a modern day version.

Could part of the problem be that the artist/director is white?
Some people are becoming more stupid by the day with racism. If the actors involved have no objection to playing the role, I don't see why anyone else should be offended on their behalf. Big favour this lady is doing them. She's potentially putting them out of work.
Good point well made Naomi, I don't find it offensive - rather intriguing really, but not sure it really 'works' as hoped.

Then Art of any kind is very much down to the individual.
Looks about as artistic as an unmade bed or a stack of bricks to me.
//...the work has attracted criticism, particularly in Berlin, where it caused fury among anti-racism campaigners, who questioned the authority of a white director to tackle the story of black exploitation.//

A perfect example of .... erm ..... racism.

Serious question to AOG, and I'm not trying to be sarcastic...

How on earth do you manage to find these stories in such a short space of time?

Do you have a computer app that searches UK newspaper sites?

I'm impressed and astonished at the sheer number of race stories you're able to dig out.

It's almost like they're truffles for you.

Seriously - how do you do it???
sp, no surprise with this one. I get the impression that AOG reads the Daily Mail every day - so why wouldn't he notice the story?

At the National Art Gallery in Dublin, a husband and wife were staring at a portrait that had them completely confused.

The painting depicted three black men totally naked sitting on a park bench. Two of the figures had black willies, but the one in the middle had a pink willie.

The curator of the gallery realized that they were having trouble interpreting the painting and offered his assessment.

He went on for over half an hour explaining how it depicted the sexual emasculation of black men in a predominately white, patriarchal society. 'In fact,' he pointed out, 'some serious critics believe that the pink willie also reflects the cultural and sociological oppression experienced by gay men in contemporary society.'

After the curator left, an Irishman, approached the couple and said, 'Would you like to know what the painting is really about?'

'Now why would you claim to be more of an expert than the curator of the gallery?' asked the couple.

'Because I'm the guy who painted it,' he replied.

'In fact, there are no black men depicted at all! They're just three Irish coal miners. The guy in the middle went home for lunch.'
Picking up on the earlier OP today, I wonder really just how 'outraged' those who signed the petition were....

Some things can be controversial, though provoking, sensitive, challenging but
Racist?
Sorry, glitches at my end 'thought provoking' I meant!

Bravo sir...bravo!
Ta, sp - it's one of my favourite jokes.

/// How on earth do you manage to find these stories in such a short space of time? ///

Just the same as you do with gay stories.

/// Do you have a computer app that searches UK newspaper sites? ///

One doesn't need a special app, they are all on the internet, I save all the main Newspaper sites in my bookmark tool bar, then it is a simple exercise to just click on them and read their contents.

/// I'm impressed and astonished at the sheer number of race stories you're able to dig out. ///

There are plenty around, and always attract a healthy debate, even though some would wish to have a ban imposed on them.
