dark films

can anyone explain why most films and series [on TV] are so dark that it appears that most were filmed at night without lights.Indoor shots do not appear to have light switches in rooms. At present inspector lynley on, so far not seen a full face in light.

Seriously though, it could just be the new "fad" in directing, remember years ago when everything was filmed with handheld cameras? I used to get motion sickness watching The Bill some nights.
Another thing that does my head in is the sound on some films (paticularly American ones) is so bad you can hardly hear the dialogue. Thanks Godfor subtitles.

Lost count of the number of times I've shouted at the telly "put the light on!" I suppose directors think it adds atmosphere, but who goes into a dark room or house to look for an intruder (say) and doesn't switch on a light.
Also agree about sound. American dialogue is mumbled and very fast and I give up on a lot of films and TV series because I don't know what is going on.
