Kim's Clothes In Prison

In Coronation Street Jim, a long time prisoner, is allowed to wear his own clothes.
Why not prison uniform?

I wondered how they all troop in to visit just about every afternoon as well as the prisoners (ha) strolling in and out of each others cells -more like a holiday camp I think
