just saw the dentaflex ad which featured someone in a wheelchair playing with their dog. It got me thinking you virtually NEVER see disabled people living normal lives in tv programs/ adverts do you?
why is that do you think?

>>>you virtually NEVER see disabled people living normal lives in tv programs

I hardly ever watch telly but these come to mind:

Sandy Richardson, Crossroads
(Played by an able-bodied actor)

Edie Pegden, Last of the Summer Wine
(Played by Thora Hird, who was in a wheelchair).

Else Garnett, In Sickness and in Health
(Played by Dandy Nichols, who was in a wheelchair)

Robert T Ironside
(Played by an able-bodied actor)

Francesca Martinez, stand-up comedian with cerebral palsy. (The News Quiz, etc)
add Storme Toolis in New Tricks.
I agree though that actors with disabilities seem only to appear when being disabled is part of the story line.

bloddy hell chris - all of those are about 30 years ago!
Now I come to think about it no, you don`t. Not all disabled persons are in wheelchairs and maybe the powers that be in advertising (who tend to be quite young) don`t have the wherewithal to explore all avenues as to how they can portray disabled people in advertising. They are not just adverse to disabled people though - the same goes for older people, people who are over a size 10 dress size etc.
Liz Carr in Silent Witness. Though I do agree with you, you don't see it often enough.
>>>all of those are about 30 years ago!

Thora Hird was appearing (in a wheelchair) in Last of the Summer wine until shortly before her death in 2003.

Francesca Martinez is currently performing, promoting her book and writing her blog.
There's the small woman market trader in Eastenders currently and also the girl in Corrie who works in the factory.

I have just been in Singapore and I saw quite a lot of advertising boards with the picture of this lady http://www.bustle.com/articles/36173-chantelle-brown-young-takes-on-americas-next-top-model-proving-vitiligo-cant-keep-her-down It`s good to see that perceptions of beauty can be challenged.
It’s OK as long as you don’t mind that everything you are handed is covered in dog saliva.
ermm wrong thread Hymie?
Have you seen the advert?
The boot's on the other foot in BBC Radio 4's "The Archers", they have a blind actor playing a sighted character.
Reminds me of Peter Brough, who was a ventriloquist on the radio, back in the 1950s.
