Yes it is a natural function, but there are also many other natural functions that we possess but still don't find the need to display them openly in public.

I do agree with what Sqad said earlier, why does the baby need to be fed in public. I fed none of my children in public and did arrange feeding times around when I went out or socialised.
I would feel too embarrassed to do such a private and personal thing in view of others.
I also think its a shock attitude to get a response from others. If that makes me old fashioned they so be it.

Don't understand this view: I would imagine the last thing on a Mother's mind at that moment is trying to shock/get a response from others... the baby needs feeding... so it gets fed. If given the choice I bet most mothers would rather not feed in public but sometimes needs must.
On a personal level I don't care either way whether babies get breastfed in public (and I have to see it) or not.

Well ummm-'its a boob, what's so offensive about it?
If a guy got his dick out in a restaurant would you say'oh, its a dick, what's so offensive about that? Its just a body part!LOL Yes boobs are part of a woman's body but the reason a lot of people find it embarrassing in a restaurant is because women are exposing them in a restaurant. I agree with Sammy, I breastfed my babies for 9 months and I never had to do it in public. We were all encouraged to breastfeed and 'breast is best' etc, but I still think its a bonding intimate private moment and you should only do it in public if really necessary and then discreetly. I was always very milky and used to leak the other side (sorry tmi) but it was all a little messy and preferred doing it in private. You can work your social life around it, feed the baby and then go out for a few hours. Simples. I don't think I ever went to a restaurant with my babies in case they cried.BTW I really hate a crying baby whilst dining-really spoils it! I can see both sides of the argument and I think people make a big fuss over nothing, but equally I think these women should respect others.

I think comparing breast feeding to a man getting his penis out is grossly offensive. And I'm a bloke :-)
I wonder if one reason it annoys some people is precisely because it's something they never did themselves for whatever reason. But times change and surely if people feel less inhibited about it that is a good thing?

Why not plan ahead? If you know you will be in a restaurant or shopping, make sure the baby is fed before you go or express some milk off into a bottle. It seems to me it's all about "look at me I'm going to breast feed in front of you because it's my right and there is nothing you can do about it".
