Charlie Hebdo Readers Beware...the Police Are Watching You !
http:// www.bbc .co.uk/ news/uk -englan d-wilts hire-31 311798
Why would the Police want to know the names of people who have read Charlie Hebdo ? I buy Private Eye on an irregular basis...does that mean that I am on a Police watch list as well ?

I never leave my name and address when I buy a magazine. Someone got careless.
Let the conspiracy theories roll:
"Wiltshire's Chief Constable Mr Ali Akhbar Stevenson said there was no truth in the rumours that the police were targeting suspected EDL operatives in the area"
Alternatively
"Wiltshire's Chief Constable Mr Oswald Molesworth said there was no truth in the rumour that the force were attempting to target Moslem extremists in the area collecting copies of the magazine to burn"
etc

This appears to have been the i iative of just one officer and not Wiltshire Police Policy.
4 copies were sold by the newsagent, probably not subscribers, but those who bought the magazine purely for the offensive Muhammed cartoons issue.
The motivation for the request for addresses of the magazine purchasers is unclear. We could speculate, but we could be widely wrong. For example, it would be interesting to see if any of the 4 people who bought it had any links to extreme right wing groups?
MI6 did used to somehow log 'on your file' if you had one, which newspapers and magazines you read. If it was the 'Guardian, 'New Statesman' or 'Private Eye' it meant you were probably a suversive and Communist.

but surely this country won't be safe until the security services have all the surveillance powers they ask for and every last newsagent in Wiltshire is on a database somewhere??

I think it is because if there is a clutch of arson in Wilts
they can say "we are not investigating those because they brought it on themselves - cases disposed of !"
no I Mean
they can investigate more efficiently ( of course )
Mikey mieky - the idea of the police gathering information which is only about criminals ! The support police of the Lawrences if you recollect made lists of all the people visiting Stephen's bereaved parents so they could enhance their safety

It seems like an odd request of the newsagent. Perhaps the Police were investigating a crime?
Maybe someone harrassed their neighbour or local mosque by posting the magazine through their door. In that case, it would be legitimate for the police to try and find out who locally had purchased a copy. Obviously I am guessing, but I cannot think of any reason the Police might want the information other than part of an investigation

That's a pretty pinko wet liberal guess Gromit
The leak cant have come from the police so it must be the newsagent and perhaps we could ask him....
yeah perhaps charlie hebdo had been used in a crime - the only one of the month in the willtshire village of Little Happens and they found a folded up copy of Charlie Heb at the scene.....
and it had arabic writing on it ! actually they found out months later after a crimewatch appeal that the Arabic was - - - kulna sharly - which means "we are all sharly".....
I will someone else carry on the mystery - which of course I have not made up....
