It's a fact of modern culture that audiences have caught the 'need to be involved' bug which involves whooping and screeching at any and every opportunity.
I recall once again watching Steve Harley singing 'Make Me Smile' at an outside gig, and the two extremely well-known pauses before the guitar breaks.
A lady just in front of me seemed to imagine that Mr Harley's performance would be enhanced for himself, and the surrounding watchers, if she took the brief silence, and inserted a loud "Woooo!" at the top of her voice.
Quite who advised her that her contribution was either value-added, or indeed required at all, remains a mystery known only to her.
My motto is simple - if you didn't attend rehearsals, you can't join in the gig!!

RandyMarsh - "seriously Andy, come on, one Woooo and that sticks in your memory!. Good job you don't cover dance music. :)"
I attend gis where whooping and shireking is the order of the day before, during, and after - absolutely no problem.
But thy dynamics of an acoustic song with a silence usually means that the silence is an integral part of the song, so some silly attention-seeking woman putting her pointless interruption in the middle of it simply detracts from the enjoyment of others around her.
If I was a paying guest, I would have been even more annoyed!!!
