Is anyone else appalled at the amount of garbage which has washed up onto these beautiful Pacific Islands? They make English beaches look positively pristine. I think manufacturers of plastic bottling, etc, should be held responsible for making this non-biodegradable junk.

Yes, it's not the thoughtless people who dispose of it like that, who are to blame at all.
lol yes!

However I think I heard it explained that it only happens when there's a big storm.

Still, If I was there I'd be pleased, hoping to sift through for some potential goodies, remember when the girls found the bottle of pop? LOL
To be fair the worst litter I see round my area is after the bin truck has been.

Yes of course people are to blame as well. That will never stop. So in that case all manufacturers of disposable products should be forced to make them biodegradable.
If you go on the beaches in Cornwall after a storm you will see the amount of debris that gets washed up. This is rubbish from ships at sea.
You see all sorts of crap on the beaches here. I have done beach cleaning in the SW and a lot of it is stuff that has come from ships. There`s usually a lot of nylon fishing net as well. You even find stuff that has come across the Atlantic. Nowhere is immune.
Unfortunately there are 'garbage patches' made up mainly of plastics in several areas of the oceans. It's stuff that gets caught in a vortex due to currents - which wouldn't be there if we cared more about chucking rubbish anywhere.
