He`d hardly started on his speech when he commented on the "love between Roman Catholic priests and lawyers" He`s an intelligent man - does he think that by making contraversial comments which have nothing to do with the subject matter he is being funny and entertaining? He undermines himself IMO

*Stephen*
He reveals himself.
i didnt see the omemnt but on the face of it does not seem controversial. People know what they are getting with SF relly though, dont they?
Thinks he's Oscar Wilde. The only thing they have in common is that both did time in chokey.
I think also that people are expecting that sort of comment and wait for it, so he says it upfront, gets it out of the way so the audience will settle down and listen to the rest.

I have read his autobiography and I know that he had a hard time with his sexuality when he was young (who doesn`t) and his depression but the Baftas are not about him - they are about the people that win awards. I just can`t see why he feels the need to make cheap jokes as he is a very funny and entertaining man in his own right. It`s boring and I turned off.
He's chosen because he's witty, risqué and controversial - it wasn't really off topic either.

He was referring to the subject matter of some of the films, in particular 'Spotlight' starring Mark Ruffalo.

Calm doon, it's Mr Fry and artistes.
Was it better or worse than this?

Worse but then again I have seen Ricky Gervais - he makes up for his short stature with his mouth.
Ditto. I have often admired his intellect and breadth of reference - only to be pulled up by a crass remark
the Oscars feature sharp-tongued comedians too. I guess the idea is to entertain the audience; if it was just about dishing out awards, they could be put in the post. Does anyone outside the editing business really care that Fury Road got a Bafta?
Don't know who Fury Road are - don't care either. :(
Mad Max film, jourdain. It isn't bad but I wouldn't bother watching it receiving awards (and in fact I'm not).
Thanks jno - it wasn't on my 'must watch' list and I'm relieved to have confirmation!
^^ I should explain that 'Mad Max' films also come into my category of 'don't bother'! :)
He has Manic Depression which may result in him having many ideas that seemed like a good idea at the time. They seldom are. Some are probably illegal.

I lived with a manic-depressive once, wolf... believe me, I know!!!
