Are there places that have amazed or moved you, unexpectedly perhaps?

Some of mine:

Culloden: haunting

The new Coventry Cathedral: having lived from birth amid mediaeval churches and a wonderful Norman cathedral I thought I would hate it. It moved me to tears.

Venice: on my first visit, coming out of a narrow waterway (in a water taxi from the airport) into the Grand Canal just by the Rialto ~ magical!

Baldric, I usually enjoy your contributions: but not this time.
Years ago my mum took us around the Blackwatch museum in Perth. I am not an emotional person but there was something about all the photographs of the young guys who died in the first world war. It was thought provoking.
Surprise View, on the edge of Sheffield:

Thanks for those links, Baldric; apologies if I seemed unduly abrasive.
It took six different modes of transport to get there from Tokyo but boy was it worth it.

Oh I don't know, Baldrics post reminded me of a good friend who lived in *** Chipbury.

Those are wonderful, Captain; I love those with the swans.
The Grand Canyon
Views from the top of the Eiffel tower,
Views from the top of the Empire State Building
Niagara Falls..
The Leaning Tower of Pisa..
Stepping off the plane in Hawaii and smelling the scent of flowers wafting in the breeze, totally unexpected at a busy airport.

Bloody Portuguese red! Sorry, Baldric. I should have been thanking Buenchico.
Sagrada Familia. I didn't anticipate how beautiful it would be inside, it took my breath away.
Did you know that some of the most highly paid workers in France are the lift boys in the Eiffel Tower? Last I heard it was £30,000 p.a. and that was over twenty years ago!
Mauthausen Concentration Camp in Austria; one of the Nazi death camps. Still an unbelievably strange atmosphere about the place 70 years on.
Question Author
Wow! Where do I apply?
Go and see the Venetian Hotel in Vegas and have a gondola ride. It will make your jaw drop. You will think you are in Venice. It even has a false but realistic sky!
Question Author
Woops! Not for Mauthausen, obviously!
