'The Magdalene Sisters', BBC2 11:50 pm. Whilst it is not based on a singke true story, it is said to accurately portray events which were commonplace in such institutions. For those who haven't seen it yet, it is a quite shocking film - the biggest shock, imho, coming in the end credits.

Ah the "caring" Roman Catholic church again.

This is a horrible despicable religion and who knows why so many people follow it.

Two things have come out of Italy:- The Catholic Church and the Mafia and I think the Catholic church is the worst of the two.

They have caused so much pain and suffering.

I can't, Ken....I have watched part of it but those nuns are in my family history and I despise them.....it breaks my heart to think of the pleasure they took in being so evil and cruel in the name of their God.

hc4361 @ 1502; No. Without spoiling it for anyone, the film opens up in the early 60s. Then, at the end, another date is given which, when i first saw the film, quite shocked me.

Is it about laundry girls? I went to a convent in Singapore with nuns as a boarder & never had abuse like that depicted of those in Ireland. I find it v. sad that the faith is so demonised by irish catholics.

IC are either more god-fearing or the garda had firmer control on populace.

They didn't operate only in Ireland, Tambo....and Catholicism is a religion that deserves every criticism it receives.

VHG youre so wrong. My daughter was educated in our local convent in 90s by Bridgittine nuns. ALL her peers are professionals, doctors/dentists/tv journalists/lawyers etc including her wot is wed to George Clooney ;)

I've been reading a thread in my local forum about a RC.boys grammar school. The regime was brutal. Boys were battered with various implements, the most favored being the leather strap. The same names of the priests kept being mentioned, it looked like a school for sadists.

I saw this film a few yrs ago añd it left me iñ tears, but will record tonight's to watch again!
Cannot believe the cruelty, añd must admit, I don't feel at all religious añy more.

I went to a catholic primary school, some of the 'teachers' were nuns....otherwise known as 'some ofvthe biggest bitches to walk the face of the earth'. The fear of god was literally beaten into us......would be called child abuse these days. It took me a good long tome to rid myself of the guilt I felt if I passed by a church and did not make the sign of the cross!

Up until a few decades ago nuns in Dublin denied that these laundries ever existed. They had to acknowledge it when excavations were done in their convent grounds and numerous tiny graves were uncovered. So heartbreaking.

Angela's Ashes shows the dire straits Ireland suffered. The church refused to take in her kids because they couldnt afford free care. Churches & convents are self financed or dependant on charity. If the community is poor everyone suffers.

The Catholic Church is not only one of the most evil organisations in the world, Tambo....it is one of the richest too.

"Everyone suffers" - I have yet to meet a starving priest......but I have met many who've eaten plenty of pies.......probably bought with the pennies of the poor.

My experience of the faith contradicts yours gness. My childhood was happy due to good parenting & religious upbringing. Our backgrounds are different but the faith is still central to good works, which I support by donation.

If you want to know what it was like to be a public school in the sixties look at "If" - I did and thought why I am wasting two hours of my time looking at something I lived through ?
