The Bill (29 September 2005) was about  a child who went missing 20 years ago. Now finally his where abouts was reveiled to be in the canal.   Surley 20 years ago the canal would have been searched.  His body was in  a  trunk so it wouldn't have been hard to find

Not necessarily - things were a lot less sophisticated, even only 20 yars ago.

Because of various interruptions (my two year old son), I can't quite remember if Pauline Quirk's character / the murders / the victims originated from 'that manor' so it may not have been the first place the police would have looked.

Thirdly, it is, of course, a drama. So don't let a few logistical realities get in the way of constructing a story.

Didn't see this particular episode, but I have seen other programmes where the murderer has waited for the Police to search a particular place (in one case his cellar) before then disposing of the body in that place.
