Old film

There was a film on a couple of months ago on one of the terrestrial channels, probably BBC2, C4 or C5, about a plane that crashed out in the desert with about 5 or 6 people on it. There was one bloke, who had a sniper rifle, who was trying to turn everyone against each other, and get other people to go and try and get help. In the end two people got rescued by helicopter, and the man with the rifle was left to live and fight with some apes. Any idea what the film was called???

Apes in the desert? Are you sure? Sounds like it might be The Flight of the Phoenix with James Stewart and Hardy Kruger.
