Following our recent conversation concerning Salman Rushdie’s ‘Midnight’s Children’, I’ve just finished reading it. Suffice to say that after my dour experience with ‘The Satanic Verses’ and now this, I shan’t be reading Rushdie again.

I too bought the Satanic Verses to see what all the fuss was about, but was so bored I only got part way through.
Naomi, that's interesting. I must admit I read it around 1993/4 and didn't mind it but my tastes have changed so it would be interesting to see what I would make of it if I re-read it, something I tend not to do.

I haven't read any of his other work.

By the way, it must be at least a month since vetuste was on AB?

Thanks for letting me know about the book :)
I spent a day at Istanbul airport between flights, so I bought a copy of Midnight's Children. I got to page 100 and then laid it aside and spent the rest of the day buying Turkish delight instead.

However, it's just not a style of writing I enjoy much; that doesn't mean it's bad. Readers' tastes harden and patience shortens as they get older, I find.

Ag, I spoke to V_E on an old thread a couple of days ago. I think he looks in. I’ve just started another book by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, ‘The Watcher in the Shadows’. I enjoyed his ‘The Shadow of the Wind’ and ‘The Angel’s Game’. We’ll see how this one goes.

OG, I agree. Very tedious. I abandoned it too.

Jno, of course I know he isn't, but I get the impression that he could well be an enthusiastic member of a Creative Writing class.
Naomi, glad vetuste is ok.

I am aware of Zafon's work but not read them. I have so many titles awaiting that I think I need to convert a room into a library!!

ag, as I think I told you, since being asked to recommend something to a book club - in that case 'The Shadow of the Wind - which upon reading they hated, I hesitate to recommend any book to anyone! :o)
You did Naomi :o)
I read "Midnights Children" when it won the Booker Prize in 1981, and I thought it was marvelous....I had never read anything like it before, or since come to that.
Mikey, it won the Booker of Bookers too!

Have you read any more Rushdie?
I did try Satanic Verses but didn't get very far.

I don't know anyone who did enjoy it and many couldn't finish it!
