Anyone else cringe at Matt Baker's gymnastics commentaries? "Oh my word!" "Goodness me!" etc. I wince constantly, and I find him so false. But the BBC seem besotted by him. Lord knows why

///it's always a good idea to have a commentator who knows what they are talking about./// Not if you can't understand a word he says it's not, he's ruined Countryfile as well.

I thought it sounded like him. He gets everywhere, doesn't he? Started out so fresh, a pity.
He's an ex-gymnast and so knows his stuff.....it's always a good idea to have a commentator who knows what they are talking about.

I agree Jack, but he did go a bit OTT as if it was a life or death completion, which its not, its a sport!
Yes, it's just a sport, but there are some amazing performances being put out there. I think he's fine as a commentator.
I can't bear his fellow commentator - Christine. For some reason, her voice really annoys me.
Yes they were amazing Clove, and I just hope the North Koreans don't get life in jail when they get home, for not winning the Gold. :-(
If you find Matt Baker makes you cringe then what about Mark Chapman with elongated pronunciation of words.

Another thing that makes me cringe is British tennis fans doing that "Let's go" chant. Awful
Conjugate the verb "to medal"? Bleurrghhh!

No wonder they want grammar schools brought back.

Sportsmen and women, being every child's hero now have more influence over our language's future than most teachers do (at the end ov da day, Brian).

That's probably a phrase that's been invented by sportsmen who are university graduates.
Grumpy01, I haven't noticed Mark Chapman's thing that you mentioned. Do you have any examples?
At least Matt is a former gymnast and knows the sport, we have to listen to the awful tones of Hazel Irvine, Helen Skelton, there will be no medals for the three irritating degrees, Hazel Helen and Clare!

Dreadful dumbed down tosh
He has an awful twang - and that Welsh burd that accompanies him on that dreadful Beeb 1 show after the news is even worse.
Actually I dis agree with this about explayers commentating on theirown sport Would n't it be refreshing to have an outsider of their sport. That way we might get a honest opinion instead of all this fawning .Ex jockey on swimming .Bull fighters on tennis ,Clay pigeonist on rowing .anyone agree ?
Hypognosis, if you think "to medal" is bad, how about "to podium"?
How about 'to podium to medal'......?
Question Author
So far in the last hour, Baker has FOUR TIMES said "this is going down to the wire" in that forced excitement tone of his. Dear BBC, please dump him
DTC 'to podium to medal' ............. I either love you or you need exorcising!
