Graham Norton Takes Over Children In Need.

It's been announced that Graham Norton will host this year's Children In Need from the BBC.

I wonder if he will take a salary - the only person involved in the show to do so - and then, when found out, say he didn't even know he was being paid - like his predecessor Saint Terry Wogan did?

andy-hughes, for years someone was paying a regular amount into one of my bank accounts - and I was totally unaware of it. I don't have the number of sources of income that Terry Wogan had - but I missed it. Easily done. I presume his manager would have handled any fee negotiations (not that there were any in this instance - according to the BBC) and his accountants would have dealt with the rest. As Ummmm said, I doubt he ever looked at a bank statement.

Wogan was 'twinkly and inoffensive', Norton is 'twinkly and cheeky' and Children in Need, whilst worthy, is one of the most boring night's viewing on the BBC, in my opinion.

I wish GN well in this years C-i-N.

I wouldn't know the truth of the matter regarding Terry Wogan taking a fee and being 'found out' and changing tack, but I would say that it is perfectly reasonable to state on here negative comments about him despite his recent passing.

It is like saying that one was not fussed on David Bowie or his music or found Victoria Wood's brand of comedy and persona irritating.

Somebody's death, recent or not, does not mean that an uncomplimentary view of that person should not be aired.

It's interesting because I think the avuncular Ken Bruce would do a very good job. He has an easy, engaging charm if not quite the charisma of Norton.

Bruce has also fulfilled the R2 commentary on Eurovision for years and Norton was of course chosen to step in Wogan's shoes there!

I am entirely in agreement - people can and will state their views on people in the pubic eye, living or dead - it goes with the territory.

I have expressed an opinion - not shared by some - to which I am entitled, and asked a legitimate question about his successor for Children In Need.

Ideally, 'lessons will have been learned' - and the BBC will be less profligate with licence payers' money, and I am quite sure that Mr Norton will have a firmer grip on both his finances, and his moral code.

My reference to Wogan's 'garbage persona' was my personal opinion of the caricature that he created which simply became more achingly nonsensical and ironic as time went on.

He developed a pattern of speech used by no-one else on the planet (although Lisa Tarbuck is getting there!) when he was either ... breathlessly ... close-to-the-mic ... brogish ... and ..ahhh ... twinkly, or he was ROARING like a whaling ship captain in a Force Nine gale.

Add to that the constant nuclear-force self deprecation - "Oim just a leetle Oirish eejit, I nuthin' about nuthin .." with the monstrous irony of a man who was one of most popular people in the country.

Yes, I loathed the man - but with I believe, good reason.

I know someone who detests Sir Bruce Forsyth with a passion to the point where the TV is in danger of having a gaping hole in it when he appears on screen.

All to do with his dreadful jokes, mumbling and shuffling his feet when attempting to dance evidently!

I do have something of a bee about Sir Terry Wogan, and he is far from the only person - it's all part of the pleasure of our 'celebrity' culture.

As for having a strong view about someone I don't know, I guess it comes from the same mind set as some on here who pontificate loftily about an entire world religion, and I would suggest they don't know all of them either - but it never stops an opinion being shared.
