It is slightly worrying though that at 16 and going through their GCSE's they don't know the dates.

Having said that there is a lot that they don't need to know for everyday life looking back on my life at school and then college and uni - what difference would it have made to me had I not known the dates!

jno....the world has been commemorating the First World War for the last 2 years.

Peter the Great was born in 1672, and died in 1725, so how on earth could he have have been around in 1914-1918 ( or for the Americans, 1916 to 1918 )

Islay....even a precursory knowledge of WW1 would demonstrate that most of the trouble Europe has had since 1918, were caused by WW1.
