I felt a bit sorry for one contestant that only managed to get 3 points on his specialist subject, the books of Bill Bryson. He picked up a bit on the general knowledge but still lost in the end.

Just too many books from which to pick questions.

Danny....yes, you are probably right there, but 3 points was still a very poor result.
Obviously, having read all Bill Bryson's books, as I have, doesn't qualify you for being a contestant on Mastermind.

Tilly....yes you are right !
I was cringing as I've never seen such a low score but he made a very respectable comeback on GK and didn't even end up last. Agree with danny.
So he wasn't thick, just unfortunate. :-)

Interesting (to me) that Bryson said life was better for people in this country in (I'm guessing) the early 70s. He is quite a liberal sort, after all, isn't he.
apparently someone once scored one point on their specialist subject

^In his last book.
Just didn't know his subject very well by the sound of it. Or underestimated the task.
It's a good idea to narrow the field a bit. Bill Bryson has written so many books, unless the chap had read them inside and out I inumerable times he didn't have a lot of chance, added to nerves. The may have been better to just study say the books on USA or UK, if allowed to cut it down that far.
In 'Little Dribbling' he revisited most of the places he'd been to in 'Notes from..'

He concluded that the changes he witnessed were not necessarily for the better.
This is the one I remember that made me cringe. Felt so sorry for him:
I'm afraid im a it of a miserable old harrumpher when it comes to mastermind. I'm not sure if Ruston is better now than it was in the 70s (well I am, but we'll let that pass) Mastermind seems to have dumbed down though from that time. An irritation for me is the way it's been 'speeded up'. Soon they probably won't even bother inviting contestants out of their seats :-)
Ruston is rubbish these days but Britain is def better :-)
Must be David Lammy, Lol.
