Does anyone know the title of the novel which led to a film being made about an unscrupulous salesman who seduced women into buying things beyond their financial means and which highlighted the problem of getting into debt by buying goods on hire purchase?

 The novel does not have the same title as the film. Their are five letters in the novel title!!
