Strikes me watching 'crash for cash' examples on TV that if drivers kept a safe distance from the car in front most of these 'accidents' would never happen.

As soon as you do (on a dual carriageway, anyway) some oik will almost certainly pull in from the offside lane and reduce your "safe distance" by half (or often less). So you drop back to a new "safe distance", and guess what? I'll leave you to it!

Although it would be excellent if all drivers tried to drive to the standards laid down in 'Roadcraft' (police Class 1, Institute of Advanced Motorists, etc), all I am asking is that drivers do what they have to do on the basic driving test! Keep their distance, concentrate, two hands on the wheel.
