I meant to post this earlier today. I thought last nights "Who do you think you are" was extraordinarily powerful. I have read and studied t lot about the Holocaust, but this program brought it home so very well. I wanted to give poor Ruby a big hug.

Totally agree, I saw the start and recorded it as we were off to the pub quiz. I've never particularly liked her but as you say she needed a hug last night.
Yes, agree, found this very moving; especially the fact that the drugs she said she'd been taking had left her unable to have the real emotional response she so obviously wanted to have to what she discovered.
How lucky we are to be living in an age when people are much more prepared to talk about difficult things, and that the stigma of mental illness is gradually being eroded.
Oh...I missed that. May have a look on iPlayer. I like Ruby, mad as she is.

I actually thought it was pants. There have been much more evocative WDYTYR's concerning the holocaust. how ruby didn't quite put together that her mental instability was down to genetics after the first five minutes, I don't know.
I thought it was excellent- I saw her in interview a view days before the programme aired and she said it explained so much about how her mental health was in her genes and brought such understanding.

Her words 'I'll never look at life the same way again'.
I love Ruby and always have but couldn't get into the programme at all that I switched off.
I thought it was very moving one of the best in the series of programmes.
interestingly, on a visit to Vienna recently, I felt strangely uncomfortable in the city. When you see the cheering crowds welcoming Hitler, it gives you the shivers, and unlike Germany, Austria has never apologised for its past.
Missed that Mikey, must watch it thanks.
I like her a lot. I've recently bought her book 'Sane new world'

Glad that others thought well of this program.

The more I learn of Shoa, the more I am amazed that a country that produced Beethoven and Goethe could also do this.
Probably one of the best of these programmes I've seen. Well worth watching.
Missed it, but I've heard and read so much about it since it was one that I will definitely watch a repeat.
Managed to catch up Mikey. Isn't family history/history interesting. How sad the rest of her family couldn't flee. Ruby finally finding an answer to her problems were in the family genes. She's very sharp & witty, interesting lady.

Eleena....I so glad that you enjoyed the programme.
( if that is the word )

She is very witty. I saw her one-woman stage show here in Swansea many years ago, and people were rolling in the aisles. She is extremely talented and has had to face her own demons, long before this programme was made.

Lets hope we see more of Ruby in the future.
She is very talented Mikey. Isn't it sad that as a child she thought 'she' was the reason for her parents weird ways. A child carrying that around in her head, no wonder she had her demons. What a monstrous union.
Question Author
Eleena....her parents dreadful story goes a long way to explain Ruby's relationship with her parents, which was pretty dire by all accounts. Who could have come through all that they did, unharmed ?
Exactly Mikey. The eyes are a great indicator of trauma.
But it was proven that Ruby’s mothers mental condition was hereditary, not an effect of being thrown out of Vienna by the Nazis.
Zacs, that's right. And Ruby suffers from the same condition as her mother - and her aunt and grandmother, both of whom ended their days in a mental institution.
Yes Zacs, that's what I said.
