Was watching Bing Crosby on Sky Arts. I had him recorded. The voice that man had - just poured from him - so easy listening.

when it was over - I inadvertently turned on X-factor and some critter was screaming in front of Nicole Scherginger and her companion. Both said the screaming guy had a lovely tone.

I immediately switched off. Terrible singers and songs.

Okay...people have different tastes. Bing Crosby is not my cup of tea.

AH, OK.
I haven't watched any of this series of the X-Factor, but if any of the contestants want a crack at the charts, they need to invest their delivery with serious amounts of hysteria and hyperbole - that seems to be what's featuring in the charts these days - every singer seems to be one breath away from a thrombo!

You don't need to like Bing - just his melodious voice and of many of that era. Nat, Dean, Frank, etc etc.
Oversinging is an epidemic amongst these wannabees.

JJ, I agree with you entirely. Bing had a wonderfully melodic voice, clear, and right on the note.
His earlier recordings hold great appeal for me. My favourite is this one from 1932.

As Andy says - they are ready for the big h-attack or massive laryngitis for ever. Damaged vocal chords which would be a blessing.
Not my type of music, JJ.

I also hate the over singing.
Bing Crosby was a wonderful singer, a talented actor and a horrible person. (He frequently left his kids black and blue from the severe beatings he gave them). Even so, I've got loads of CDs of his recordings, which I love listening to.

I generally avoid TV talent shows but I do enjoy searching Youtube for some of the better acts from such shows from around the world.

If you want to hear a really great voice, move the slider to 1 min 45 sec for the start of the performance here ;-)

He has a nice mellow voice. I have a photo of Bing with an Uncle and friend in America in the 50s

Chris I did hear that he was somewhat a little cruel to his children but I didn't believe it - just thought it was nasty media

chris - I have my speakers off at the mo so will listen to the little boy tomorrow.
I think what is missing today are lyric writers.

The songs of today have hardly any lyrics and if they do it is generally the same set of words over and over again.
You're listening to too much rap, aog ;-)

Not a sentence I ever thought I would type... :-)

They missed the 'C' off when they named that type of music.
I blame thunderthighs, y'know, the one who 'doesn't do stairs', for the epidemic of ululating wannabes paraded past the audience of an evening.

Let rubbish carry on long enough and it becomes the norm. Look at 'rapping'.
AOG "I think what is missing today are lyric writers."

You obviously are not listening enough to recent music.
Haven't watch XFactor for years, however when I did I was thrilled when Leona Lewis won one particular year.

Occasionally, these type of shows do churn out the odd person with an amazing voice.
It would be ignorant to dismiss an entire genre of music as being uniformly unlistenable, when the reality is that there is good and bad, excellent and mediocre, wonderful and dreadful, as there is in all genres.

Rap is no different from any other musical genre in that regard.
Maybe some black people have moved in next door to AOG?
