Was watching Bing Crosby on Sky Arts. I had him recorded. The voice that man had - just poured from him - so easy listening.
when it was over - I inadvertently turned on X-factor and some critter was screaming in front of Nicole Scherginger and her companion. Both said the screaming guy had a lovely tone.
I immediately switched off. Terrible singers and songs.
I haven't watched any of this series of the X-Factor, but if any of the contestants want a crack at the charts, they need to invest their delivery with serious amounts of hysteria and hyperbole - that seems to be what's featuring in the charts these days - every singer seems to be one breath away from a thrombo!
JJ, I agree with you entirely. Bing had a wonderfully melodic voice, clear, and right on the note.
His earlier recordings hold great appeal for me. My favourite is this one from 1932.
Bing Crosby was a wonderful singer, a talented actor and a horrible person. (He frequently left his kids black and blue from the severe beatings he gave them). Even so, I've got loads of CDs of his recordings, which I love listening to.
I generally avoid TV talent shows but I do enjoy searching Youtube for some of the better acts from such shows from around the world.
If you want to hear a really great voice, move the slider to 1 min 45 sec for the start of the performance here ;-)
It would be ignorant to dismiss an entire genre of music as being uniformly unlistenable, when the reality is that there is good and bad, excellent and mediocre, wonderful and dreadful, as there is in all genres.
Rap is no different from any other musical genre in that regard.
