Because it is a simple, easy and effective way for them to reach their constituents, and vice versa.

It is easier and quicker to fire off a quick FB post, or a tweet than make a lengthy addition to a blog.
Many high profile politicians have accounts which are administered on their behalf rather than make the posts personally.

It is a very quick way to get your unadulterated message out, this is why The Donald loves it. The MSM cannot twist their words (although many still have a good try!).

In addition if you are courting votes you need to use every medium and every trick possible to ensure you reach the largest audience.

As JTH points out many have someone doing it for them. As for abuse I'm afraid they just have to switch off, in the past anonymous letters or a small parcel with a turd in was often sent. It is just the delivery mechanism that has changed.

I am sure that the requisite thickness of skin required to get you to the position of MP means that all of them can more than deal with the pointless ramblings of keyboard cowards.

The only real issue is that it takes time for someone, MP staff members if not the MP personally, to wade through all this garbage and sift it for messages that actually require a response, not simply being deleted for the nonsense that they are.
