What is it about American politics that a presidential candidate, Trump, can denegrate a man who had done the state some service yet go on to win?

AMES, Iowa — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump slammed Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a decorated Vietnam War veteran, on Saturday by saying McCain was not a war hero because he was captured by the North Vietnamese.

“He’s not a war hero,” Trump said. Sarcastically, Trump quipped, “He’s a war hero because he was captured.” Then, he added, “I like people that weren’t captured.”

Bit late to ask *that* question, sadly...
Did Trump go to Vietnam I wonder !.

Trump tweeted condolences to McCain's family but apart from that made no mention of his career.
Another small minded act, imo.
Draft dodgers criticising people who did their duty are something of a feature of politics there.
Ah the old flat foot thing !
He was able to avoid conscription through a series of student deferments, as well as a medical deferment for a bone spur in his foot.

Trump is a moron and a thicko, why else would he denigrate McCain, who served his country, in such mean minded terms
//Trump tweeted condolences to McCain's family but apart from that made no mention of his career. //

No? Well did he say McCain was not a war hero because he was captured by the North Vietnamese or didn't he?

At different times, yes.
So he's not said it recently? I mean he hasn't actually been disrespectful at the time of McCain's death? Wouldn't be just a teensy weensy bit of spinning going on here, would there sandyRoe?
Mr Trump drew similar opprobrium a year ago when he said Senator John McCain, who as a naval aviator was shot down and taken prisoner during the Vietnam War, was not a hero because he had been captured.
Being disrespectful at all in the manner he was is bad form. Staying silent, when everybody else from across the political world has paid personal tribute, is also more than a little telling.

Still, at least he has some manner of respect for the dead -- I've no doubt that Trump seriously disliked McCain but since news of the death he has at least held his tongue.

That's got to be a first for the President!
Jim, //since news of the death he has at least held his tongue. //

No he hasn't. He said :

//My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!//

No need for spinning with someone like Trump. When you think he couldn't sink any lower, he does.
I meant "held his tongue about McCain". Everybody else, across the political spectrum, has paid personal tribute to McCain. Trump has not. Who knows why he has not?
Never understood how the Americans voted in Trump
Now the president and the voters are laughing stocks
Yes Trump has done the right thing by holding his tongue. As observed elsewhere tho Trump missed the point about Senator McCain, whose heroism didn’t really exist in the fact he was captured, but what he did and what happened to him after that.
Senator McCain was a bit of a one-off really, and the sort of person America could do with more, not less of. Actually he was everything Trump claims to be but isn’t: a patriotic American - all action hero who campaigned fearlessly against corruption in politics. He probably misjudged things by going with Sarah Palin, in 2008, but then he may not have had a choice at the time in his eyes I am not sure.
Spinning.......... When it comes to trump, lol.
He hasn't said anything personal because he had nothing personal to say, he bought himself to the white house, he's an ignoramus mogul only coming to the fore in recent years, back in the day he would have been known as new money like it was dirt, I seen someone say earlier war hero and McCain just didn't add up because they knew someone that was a pow with him, nevertheless, he went to vietnam while trump was pimping his way across USA, trump has no class, he may get things done but he's an ignoramus buffoon, tweeting a condolence as a leader of a country just shows it
Jim, if he'd have played the sycophant you'd have been the first to gleefully jump up and down and call him dishonest because of what he said previously - and the rest of the world would have joined in. He's wise to simply offer condolences.
No, I would not have. It would have been respectful of him to be polite about a dead man, no matter what he said in the past. As it is, Trump has at least said nothing, and that makes for a pleasant change.

Do stop inventing hypothetical situations so that you can try and paint me badly.
